To get the best scan possible, make sure your scanner settings are set correctly for that particular image type e.g. colour or b/w.
Sheet fed scanners decide all the settings for you so all you have to do is feed your photos through the slot.
A glass lens as opposed to a plastic lens will make a scanner more expensive.
