Flatbed scanners have a flat glass surface onto which the original that you wish to scan is placed.
Because scans have two dimensions - height and width - the resolution of a scanner has two values, pixels per inch vertically and pixels per inch horizontally.
Make sure the scanning glass is clean and has no dust on it before you start scanning.
