For your safety make sure to keep long hair, jewelry, ties and the like away from the shredder feed opening.
Some materials to avoid shredding are paper clips, cardboard and heavy card stock. They may bend the teeth of the shredder and strain the motor.
Many shredders can cut through staples and paper clips, however, it is advisable to remove them first since metal dulls the shredder's blades, and if the shredder needs repairing, documents in need of shredding accumulate and become a potential security risk.
