If you're purchasing a very large shredder, the lid and shred mechanism may be heavy or cumbersome, so look for a side-loading or slide-out basket rather than a unit where you have to lift the top off to empty it.
It's easy to burn out a motor by dropping unopened envelopes and junk mail into the shredder, which may contain more paper than the shredder can handle.
Handheld models can only shred a sheet or two at a time, but they can be good enough for a single person or small family.
