The Optra S 1650 is one of the fastest monochrome printers we've tested, churning out text at 11.6 pages per minute and graphics at 2.4 ppm. Text at 600 dpi is clean and attractive; at 1200 dpi it looks even better. Closely spaced lines are clearly defined and show less of the wavering density you'll see from many other printers. In gray-scale images, the texture appears somewhat coarse, but the gray levels are easy to discern. The new HP 4000 TN beats it out of first place this month with faster text and graphics speed and great text quality. Setting up and maintaining the Optra S 1650 is easy. The toner cartridge slides on rails into the printer's belly. The printer will take either a 7500- or 17,500-page cartridge. Lexmark makes a $180 special label-printing cartridge designed to prevent damage to the printer from label adhesive and solvents. The manual has detailed explanations of how to access and clear all parts of the printer's interior if there's a paper jam. The Optra S 1650 is easy to operate.  Fortunately, most of the menu controls are also available in the printer's PostScript and PCL drivers. The Optra S 1650 supports many options that its lower-priced cousin, the Optra S 1250 (in third place on the monochrome chart) does not. The 1650 can accommodate a 500-sheet output bin ($249 list price)--and you can stack two of them together. There are also slots for two option cards, such as a network interface card or additional storage for fonts or forms.
